Capturing Culture on Camera

Much of this blog aims to capture culture on camera, and share what life is like for people living in other parts of the world. If this is something which you are keen to do for yourself, then here are just a few points which you may wish to consider.

Firstly, you should consider not simply what it is that you are hoping your images will convey, but what the culture in question is actually telling you. In other words, try not to have any preconceptions about the place or the people which you want to take photographs of, but simply let the images speak for themselves. Often these can be the pictures which end up being most eye-catching – the ones which will encourage readers to out down their pen and paper, or look away from even the most intense game of online Party poker. If you want to capture truly unique images of a particular place or people, then it is often better not to go with a set idea about the scenes or stories which you are hoping to find, and simply let the culture speak for itself.

You will also need to be alert and on the ball, with your camera always to hand. Often the most significant moments can take you by surprise, and you need to make sure that you are always in the right place at the right time if you hope to capture such scenes in camera. If this means using less sophisticated equipment for an impromptu shoot, then so be it. Often, it is not the quality of an image or film which will hold audience attention, but rather the content of what they are seeing. Remember to be respectful of the culture you are hoping to capture on camera – you will often end up with far more interesting photos and footage as a result.
